Orientation for BDS Batch 3 & MBBS Batch 29

It’s now the 4^th week of block 1. All orientation programmes have concluded and my studies are finally back on track. For the past 3 weeks, I had been involving myself in planning the orientations. Though it took up much of my time, I never regretted a single bit. At least I had some good memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

Okay, for this post, I shall write about the Welcoming Orientation Show.

Like every other year, it was held at Valley View Hotel. BDS 2 collaborated with MBBS batch 28 to organize the event. Everyone from MMMC was invited and a light brunch was served. There were many performances to keep the audience entertained. From our side (BDS), we put together 3 performances and one video slide show.  Among the 3 performances, there were 2 dances; one “goofy” dance and one malay dance. Naurah sang “Perfect” accompanied by Nigel and Suleiman. Silk, Anishika and Bhairavi were the MCs for the event.

I was involved in the “goofy” dance along with 11 other batch mates. We were given the privilege to do the opening act.  There were many other dances that came after us. Initially the girls wanted to do a K-pop dance but the boys demanded that we go for a Bollywood dance instead. (since we are in India)  After much thoughts and discussion, we decided to start off with Super Junior’s Superman and ended it with a goofy “Curry Neh” by namewee. The idea was to begin the whole act as if we really meant serious cool K-pop dance which end up being plain whacky and silly. We spent about a week to rehearse. Every night, after dinner, we will practice until 11.30 pm at the ICHS building.

Until the day of performance, we were still practicing. We also rented shinny bling bling costume from a shop in Udupi; “Basha” to complete the whole stage look.

I guess it’s not wrong to say that we were awesome on stage. Once the curtain start rolling away and the music played, a round of scream welcomed us. We were all very nervous and excited. Once my part was going to start, quickly I rushed to my position and just dancing. Sitting in the front row, I saw Dr. Arunima and Dr. Runki on my left, Dr. Ullas in the middle; and behind them a whole bunch of people.    All of them were wearing a huge smile on their face. I can see that they really enjoyed our performance and even we enjoyed the whole atmosphere on stage. Even my batch mate who once hesitated to join the dance said “let’s do it again”. It was really priceless to see everyone laughing together. No doubt there were some mistakes, but as long as we accomplished our agenda: to stir laughter among the crowd, we are happy. It was really hard work but it paid off.  

All I can say now “GIVE YOUR HANDS FOR BDS 2, WOULD YA!!!” (maaf, a bit syok sendiri)

Tooth Hunt

I’m now back in the land of Capsicum. It has been a busy week. I just only started concentrating on my studies. I find that year 2 subjects, apart from my dental subjects are quite dry. Perhaps, I might need some time to accept and enjoy them.

Just want to document my tooth hunting experience here. During the last 2 weeks of our hard- earned holiday, Dr. Jaya, our conservative dentistry lecturer gave us an assignment. She wanted us to collect extracted teeth; intact anteriors and decayed posteriors. It was really a short notice and many of us were struggling to get them. The competition is high as many from other dental schools have placed their bottles in clinics and government hospitals. 

 I went around with 2 other friends. We have been to almost 40 clinics, mainly around Puchong and PJ area. Far often the replies from the dental assistant was “Sorry, we don’t keep them. We throw the extracted teeth” or “We rarely do extraction. Even so, there were already some students waiting for their bottle to get full”. What’s more frustrating when you got to know that they threw away a FULL bottle just a week ago. And oh ya, I destroyed one of my pants as the bleach accidentally leaked out. Despite all that, I can say we are really lucky that we collected enough.  

I had to wash every single tooth, by giving them all a scrub and remove the excess periodontal ligament attached to their root. I rinse them both with antiseptic and bleach and store them in tap water. It was really interesting as each tooth holds a story. I even got some crown and bridge work among the sea of teeth. I had my facial mask and toilet rubber glove on while doing this.

So, yeah... That's about it....
