And you thought this only happens in Rapunzel.

The Bread of Life church hosted an event called “Light of Manipal 2011”. The money earned from selling the sky lantern was donated to charity. I pre-order my lantern from Christine. It was green.

That night, we lid the sky of manipal with paper flying lanterns, sending our wishes up in the air. It was truly a magical night and everyone had fun especially the BDS peeps. Photos time.

The Impomptu Meeting

I bet you never see this coming, either do I. Our program just got granted another 25 seats and they sent another extra 21 students one month after class have already started. And remember how we or rather I complained on how “There goes our chance of being caring and hospitable seniors” (prove: http://crybabylair.blogspot.com/2011/08/settling-in.html), we got the chance to experience that with this 21 new members of BDS 3. Well, I can say, they are one bunch of bubbly, fun and sporting people.

They arrived at Manipal on a Friday night, all tired and worn out with the long hours flights and bumpy bus rides. Their official orientation was on the next day. In the morning they all gathered at the hostel’s lobby. I got the privileged to lead them to their classroom. (chose the shortcut through Acar Shop) After prostho class that morning, I popped by to see how everything was going on, which ended up being involve in the help desk. And oh, we re-performed Re-Lax; just to kill time while we wait for the dean to arrive. I did the help desk with Kern Wen and the mentor for that desk was Dr.Smitha (really miss her classes). She had 3 mentees with her named Esther, John and Ivan. They reminded me how I was like when I first meet my mentor. That was one year back.

Since they were relatively lagging behind, their time table is really packed for the 1st block. They compromised on the afternoon free time on Saturdays and have lesser practical hours. Poor bunch of people. In the afternoon, we brought them out to get their textbooks, lab coats and showed them around Tiger Circles.

The plan for dinner was kinda ruined. We initially wanted to bring them to Thailin but there weren’t enough seats. We went to Medan Selera instead. I hope they didn’t mind the food there. There were more talking than eating. Well, I can say I bond with this group better than the original batch. I know it’s kinda late, but all the best for this block. Don’t feel let down because you’re new and lagging behind, instead work harder and prove you too can do it not much lesser than those who started earlier. All the best!

Ps: yes, now MMMC’s BDS program has 75 seats. Quickly apply batch 4 peeps!

Chinese Orientation for 29 & BDS 3

I’m now in the mist of my block 1 examination. Just finish my pharmacology paper today. Microbiology and pharmacology were very stressful, especially the practical components. Now I have to adapt a different way of revising them.

I just left with dental materials. Thanks to Dr.Arul’s constant self-assessment test, I’m more prepared for that paper. Just to break away from the books, I thought that might as well take some time off to update this place. I will do the write up for the Chinese orientation of batch 29 and BDS 3.

I have attended 2 Chinese orientations before and now it was our turn to host the event. We collaborated with MBBS Batch 27 in organizing the event.  Since we did dancing for the official orientation, I opt to do something different. I suggested we do a music video and also a group singing performance. Initially there were much fuss about renting a projector just for our music video and so we ended up with one slide show and one music video. (More cost efficient)  While both were played, we gave live singing performances. For the slide show, we modified “Price Tag” lyrics to convey the lifestyle of a student in Manipal. The slide show was done by Andrew and it turn out good. The whole crowd enjoyed it very much. The idea is dope isn’t it~

For the music video, I was given much pressure to produce a “hit”. (since they rented the projector just for the music video) It was based on the idea of Namewee’s Snowing In KL. We again modified the lyric of the song. Unlike the previous song, this number was a very emotional. We tried to portray the loneliness being away from home and ended it with some sort of good memories in Manipal. Tian Yuan did the recording, while Hao Liang, Silk and Kheng Jung were always there to give support and advice. Not forgetting to mention our star for the MV Kern Wen who sacrificed a lot.

It took about 1 week to complete the whole recording and editing job. It was definitely nice when I show my batch mates the end product and the smiles on their faces were simply priceless. Nigel even said “Luckily the lights were off when we watch the video, I almost cried.” I can say this is the best video that I have ever made till date.

It was held on a Saturday night. After class that morning, a few of us went for a meeting with batch 27. Honestly, I felt intimidated when I was there. Since they wanted to run the whole program once, we (as in the few of us) gave like a lame performance on the so-called-mini stage of our classroom. We got like “don’t-tell-me-that’s-all-you-got” type of reactions. Anyway as agreed, we (now the whole bunch of us) gathered to practice at Chua-Yung Yee-Tian Yuan’s crib after lunch that day.

It was so hard to get everyone to co-operate but at the end everything worked out. At 5.30pm, we headed over to Acarya Compound to do a mic test.

We all agree to wear black for the performance. Like every other year, it started off with games and then dinner with performances. As compared to the one hosted by batch 26, there were less performances this round. Batch 27 did a sketch on the “Journey to Manipal” based on the idea of “Journey to the West”. It was a good show just that it’s missing the subtitle AGAIN. (SNSD of batch 27, good job on the Gee dance) The usual manipal-style-lucky draw was also held and many of the bds junior “hit” the jackpot that night. (Sorry, I’m not supposed to warn you about it; I’m sure the hard-boiled egg tasted nice right?)

To be honest, I was really anxious to see the reaction on the crowds face when both our animation roll. I guess, many didn’t expect us to do a great job on the videos and we totally surprised them. (Though we are small, doesn’t mean we can’t produce top quality work) Everyone enjoyed the show we put up and couldn’t stop agreeing to our lyrics. We receive many praises and I think I’m the happiest person then. (syok sendiri you can say) Shall end the post with the lyrics of both songs:
Re-Lax (Price Tag)
Ok
Muscle Man
Big Head
And BDS 2
You Ready!

Seems like everybody's got no life
I wonder how they sleep at night.
When the grade comes first,
And the joy comes second,
Just stop, for a minute and Smile!
Why is everybody so serious?!
Acting so damn mysterious,
You got your black panda eyes.
And your pride so high
That you can't even have a good time.

Everybody look to the LAB, (yeah!)
Everybody look to the LIB *Library*! (ha!)
Can you feel that? (yeah!)
We are not gonna sleep tonight...

It's not about the study, study, study,
It's all about the party, party, party
We just wanna make the world dance,
Forget about the class test
Ain't about the (ha!) Learning Learning.
Ain't about the (yeah!) Distinct Distinct,
Wanna make you all dance,
Forget about the block test

(Listen, okay.)
We need to take it back in time,
There's a curfew 12 at night
And if the guard spots you and never never think eleven rupees will be FINE!
Why is everybody so obsess?
Grades can't buy us happiness.
Can we all slow down and enjoy right now?
Guaranteed we'll be feelin'
All right.

Everybody look to the LAB, (yeah!)
Everybody look to the LIB! (ha!)
Can you feel that, (yeah!)
We're partying hard tonight...

It's not about the study, study, study,
It's all about the party, party, party
We just wanna make the world dance,
Forget about the class test
Ain't about the (ha!) Learning Learning.
Ain't about the (yeah!) Distinct Distinct,
Wanna make you all dance,
Forget about the block test

Yea yea,
We'll keep the school bag
And take your LV bag.
Just give me ice cream from snack shack,
And you can keep the change,
Leave me the bill and all I..
Yes all I need are Lays and Cola

And guess what, in 30 seconds
I'm leaving to Class
Yes, we leaving across these undefeatable blocks
It's like this mess,
and you can't put stress on my life.
We do this for the love
so we fight and sacrifice every night,
So we ain't gonna stumble and fall never.
Waiting to see,a sign of relief uh, uh!
So we gonna keep everyone moving their feet,
So bring back the beat, and then everyone sings,

Actually we are lying, lying, lying
you need to study, study, study

So you can fly back
Ain't about the (ha!) fooling fooling.
Ain't about the (yeah!) playing playing,
Wanna pass the block test
Forget about the party

It's not about the money, money, money,
Don't study for money, money, money.
wanna make the world smile!
Forget about the worries
Ain't about the (ha!) cha-ching cha-ching.
Ain't about the (yeah!) ba-bling ba-bling,
Wanna make the world smiles,
Forget about the worries

Marena 都要穿着那包鞋
Trainer

Welcome Party for Batch 3

Greetings! Here am I, in this ungodly hour, blogging. Just woke up from my really long nap, which was supposed to be an hour or less. Going to have an SDL test and con’s dentistry competency test today. Anyhow, do forgive me for being MIA (missing in action). It’s been almost a month since I last log in here. Shall continue the list of things I need to blog about. I will continue with the orientation programs.

We organized a Welcome Party for Batch 3. It was held at the Rotary Club. Since our seniors did one for our batch last time, so we thought why not make it a BDS tradition. Hope the next batch will host one for their juniors. It took a lot of time to discuss and finalize the whole event. We decided to hand-made the door gifts.

Food was from Medan Selera, a change from the usual Manipal Canteen. At first we were quite discourage that only a few juniors are attending. We put so much effort to plan it, and they wanted to flush it all down the drain. Only after calling and dragging them out from their hostel did we managed to gather ALMOST everyone. Just lacking by one.

Some of us went there early to set up the whole place. We had balloons placed around the stage and chairs arranged in circle form. Basically we turn the whole place into a party ground.

Bhairavi and I were the MCs for that night. All of the seniors were ask to wear their “I <3 Manipal” t-shirt.

We did a roll call, just like how the lecturers take the attendance in the class after which we arranged the senior and juniors with the same roll number to seat next to each other. We got everyone introduced themselves and then played an icebreaking game.  Whoever fails to give the correct name will have to write MANIPAL using their head.

Later we allow our Muslim friends to excuse themselves for their prayer time and we had a short interaction time. Jo-Vyne got the whole crowd to play some mini games to kill the time. Dinner was served after that.

At around 8pm, we started the Shuffling game. Everyone was actively participating and I can say that this game broke the awkwardness between one another.

However, what they don’t know is that the winners got a “surprise” prize installed for them. Once the game ended, we did a short performance of the Curry Neh dance. (I think it was super not synchronized.)

The surprise was that the winners have to do the Curry Neh dance before receiving their actual prize. What more we asked them to pull one of their friends to join them. Everyone did enjoy themselves on stage.

We had a group photography session after everything ended.

We handed them their personal door gift before they left. (They were actually reluctant to leave)

The event was a success. Okay, back to my studies.
