Jewel and I thought of joining Interbatch Western Dance (Group)since last year; it was ever since we completed the dance for Lagenda. According to plan, we supposed to start practicing right after the Curry Neh performance, but it was so hard to form the dance crew. People kept withdrawing and I was quite fed-up with the whole situation. Jewel had to step in to persuade more people to join. We both were quite frustrated and almost gave-up on the whole idea.
However, thank God that it did happen and we’re able to fill the stage with 10 people (the ideal number of people). Though we didn’t have enough time to come up with a perfect performance, I think each of us did have a wonderful time dancing together. Our whole performance is divided into 5 parts.
Jewel came out with the choreography for our masquerade act. It’s based on a section of the movie “Phantom of the Opera”. The dance was all about “sharpness” but still remain elegant and smart. We were all equipped with a pair of wooden fans; painted gold on one side, black on the other. (We took up 2 afternoons to finish painting the fans.) During rehearsal, we use the prototype but they kept getting spoiled, dissembled and torn into pieces. Guess we’re too violent. For the performance, each of us wore glittery mask to give it a mystical twist. For the girls, we wore or rather wrapped a black cloth with golden flower embroideries as a skirt.
For the second dance, we did hip hop. While trying to search for a nice choreography, I stumbled upon this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=207vDzD8zek Once I show it to Jewel, immediately she nod and it was on. It’s the dance that we spend most of our time on. Like most hip hop dance, it needs energy and cool attitude. It was very hard to get everyone synchronize.
Next was Brown Eyed Girls’s Abracadabra. This was the girls’ solo stage. I learn the moves through a dance tutorial on YouTube somewhere near block 4. Everyone enjoyed the moves for this dance, and we learn it up quite fast. The boys joined us in the last part of the song and I say, they really loved shaking along.
The high point in our entire performance was delivered by the boys. Choreography includes hand tutting and shuffling. Kern Wen and Kheng Jung first suddenly collapse. Later all assemble into a line and the hand tutting begin. The shuffling moves were from Party Rock Anthem. They were really synchronized. Costume wise, they wore bright red Being Human t-shirts coupled with sunglasses. Credits go to Justin for getting the shirts.
For the last act, the girls rejoined the boys on stage and we did a short routine. It was somewhat acrobatic. I didn’t really like it but it was all we could come up in that short time.
Despite various obstacles, we were able to put on a good show. There were a lot of ideas we wanted to incorporate and sometime we regret over certain things, well at least, on the brighter side we gave our 101%. Although we just landed with 2nd place, we still got to perform at the annual day, something that some of us were eyeing on. Hard works do pay off.
